Protestant
Reinhold Niebuhr (in the New York Times Book Review)
Will Herberg has written the most fascinating essay on the religious sociology of America that has appeared in decades. He has digested all the relevant historical, sociological and other analytical studies and made these findings the basis of a new and creative approach to the American scene each chapter presents surprising, and yet very compelling, theses about the religious life of this country perhaps the most telling is that America is not so much a melting pot as three separate melting pots.
Catholic
Monsignor John S. Ke.rinedy (in Our Sunday Visitor)
A book packed with historical detail and incisive comment distinctions, subtleties, astute observations, provocative interpretations, and biting indictments. Here, surely, is a volume that everyone seriously interested in the state of religion in America today will want to-indeed, will have to digest original, brilliant, valuably constructive. Nor is this merely a mastery of facts. Understanding and sympathy are present, too
Jew
Nathan Glazer (in the New Republic)
America prescribes religion : but it does not care which one. Herberg brilliantly analyzes this remarkable religion of religion. His argument stands as the most satisfactory explanation we have yet been given as to just what is happening to religion in America.
