The Eyes are Sunlight: A Journey Through Grief
Writing The Eyes Are Sunlight not only allowed Shirley Koers to work through the grief of a deep, personal loss, it provided a “faith experience in which I confronted the demands of God in the depths of my soul." The experience resulted in a superbly written and soothing reflection on the death of her husband and her own grieving process. “However,” she explains, “the story is incidental. My purpose is to record a phase of life-facing up to the reality of grief.” In Christian terms and in terms of "what it taught me about myself, I was most truly ‘born from above.'” The author's growth through pain is a spiritual journey. Faith ex-plains it, faith permeates it. Grief can often be the beginning of spiritual discovery and The Eyes Are Sunlight demonstrates this. It is a book of hope because it does not shrink from pain. It embraces it and lovingly transfigures it. Koers also offers her readers a personal narrative rich in psychological insights into the grief-stricken mind. Out of the seemingly hopeless void of negative feelings that accompany grief, she builds a new awareness, a more tender understanding from which comes a new self that reaches out in compassion to create a more positive world. The Eyes Are Sunlight is a true love story, a powerful testimony of faith, lovingly written and deeply moving.
