How Christians Grow
How does the ordinary believing Christian "grow up" into spiritual maturity in Christ? Throughout Christian history in every age and every tradition countless answers to this question have been brought forward, raging from extreme legalism and salvation by "works" on the one hand, to the absolute passivity of quietism on the other. Now, Dr. Russell Hitt, a well-known and influential evangelical spokesman, offers practical guidance in the attainment of spiritual growth leading to a life of enrichment, joy, and fulfillment.
Of first and foremost importance on the road to spiritual development is the recognition of the individual Christian's union with Christ. In the divine redemptive process all Christians are intimately and organically related to Jesus Christ himself. Growth in grace and the knowledge of Jesus Christ is another way of describing the process of being conformed to Christ's image.
In addition to union with Christ, there are other "means of grace" which help us on our way to spiritual maturity. We see that the quiet, selfless, internal ministry of the Holy Spirit, the instrumentality of Word and sacrament, and fellowship in the Body of Christ are all parts of a holy mosaic. We are in no way left alone to cope with the challenges and difficulties of life and contradictions of our own personalities.
